The Gap We Work InImmigrant and refugee families in DC are working, raising children, and building something lasting in one of the most expensive cities in the country. And they are doing it against compounding odds.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, DC's poverty rate jumped 3.3 percentage points in a single year, reaching 17.3% in 2024. For immigrant families, the weight of that number runs deeper. A 2025 survey found that 2 in 5 Spanish-speaking immigrants had missed work due to fear of immigration enforcement. Sixty percent of families in mixed-status households reported avoiding everyday activities including work, school, and medical care. When fear becomes a barrier to showing up, the cycle of poverty tightens. As federal and local support erodes, the gap between what families need and what is available grows wider. Since 1981, Mary House has existed in that gap. Not as a program, but as a community. |
How We Show UpBreaking the cycle of poverty requires more than one solution. Mary House addresses it through three interconnected programs, designed to work together rather than in isolation. Most families navigating poverty are running between systems that were never designed to talk to each other. The energy that takes is its own barrier. Mary House removes it.
Housing is the cornerstone. When a family has a stable, affordable place to live, everything else becomes possible. From that foundation, from day one, every family is paired with a dedicated Family Advocate. Under one roof, that advocate ensures each family has stable housing, fresh produce and groceries, and takes a two-generational approach to services that addresses the needs of both parents and children at the same time. |
